The multiple award-winning BRIMSTONE & GLORY, about the National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico, is a visceral cinematic adventure captured together with his friends and collaborators director Viktor Jakovleski and Oscar-nominated producers Dan Janvey, Benh Zeitlin, and Affonso Gonçalves. The joyful collaboration was an audience-transporting hit in festivals and cinemas alike, Variety raved about his work in the film, praising his “ecstatic camera” and calling his shots “…utterly hypnotic in their color and clarity.”
Indeed, Tobias’ work has been featured in many global film festivals, where they took home a bevy of prizes. The film ATLAS, shot for his former film school colleague David Nawrath, and produced by Hans-Christian Schmid, garnered two nominations for the 2019 Deutscher Filmpreis and won two of the top prizes at the Torino Film Festival in 2018.
His recent work includes the feature BORGA, which is currently in post-production. Shot in Ghana with celebrated filmmakers York-Fabian Raabe and Alexander Wadouh, the action-packed film follows the journey of a young man as he leaves his family and life in the electronic waste yards outside Accra to search for a better life in Europe. BORGA is the first German feature to shoot in Ghana since Werner Herzog’s 1987 Cobra Verde.
